Hill Country wineries near Lake Travis

Texas is one of the larger wine producing states in the country, and most of the tasting rooms people actually visit sit in the Hill Country between Spicewood, Dripping Springs, Johnson City and Fredericksburg. From Lake Travis you are on the near edge of all of it.
What to expect
Texas tasting rooms lean casual. Expect lawns, live music on weekends, food trucks, picnic tables and dogs. Tempranillo, viognier, mourvedre and other warm climate varieties do best here, so come with an open mind rather than a Napa checklist.
Many rooms take reservations for groups of six or more, and weekend afternoons book up in spring and fall.
Planning the afternoon
Two stops is the right number. Three is ambitious once the heat and the driving add up. Start early afternoon, put the larger property second so you can linger, and eat something at the first stop.
Arrange a driver or a car service if the whole group is tasting. The roads out here are dark and winding after sunset.
Beyond wine
Distilleries around Dripping Springs run tours and cocktail flights, and the breweries between here and Austin usually have the best shade and the most room for kids.
If you want one outing that covers everyone, pick a place with a lawn, a food truck and live music. That combination exists all over this part of Texas and it is the reason people keep coming back.
