The best time to visit Lake Travis
April 2, 2026 | 6 min read

Lake Travis has a real high season and a real quiet season, and the difference shows up in crowds, temperatures and rates. Here is what each part of the year actually feels like.
Spring, March through May
This is the sweet spot for most people. Days sit comfortably warm, the wildflowers bloom across Muleshoe Bend and the roadsides, and the lake is busy without being crowded.
Spring break and the weeks around it fill fast, and so do the wildflower weekends in April. If you want a large home for a group, book this season several months out.
Summer, June through August
Summer is the classic Lake Travis trip. Long hot days, warm water, boats everywhere and evenings that stay pleasant well past dark. This is when the coves fill up and the springs run at capacity.
Plan around the heat rather than fighting it. Water in the morning, indoors or in the shade at midday, back outside after five. Homes with pools, game rooms and covered patios earn their keep in July.
Fall, September through November
Locals will tell you fall is the best season and they are not wrong. The water stays warm into October, the crowds thin after Labor Day, and the light in the Hill Country turns golden.
It is also the easiest season to get a good home on short notice, and the drive to Austin for a game day or a show is far more pleasant without summer traffic.
Winter, December through February
Winter here is mild and quiet. Days are often clear and cool enough for hiking, fires and long dinners, and the lake is calm and empty.
This is the season for a slower trip: wineries, barbecue, a firepit at night and a house that sleeps everyone without feeling crowded. Rates are at their lowest and holiday weeks are the exception.
